Lady Spartans Grab Sixth State Basketball Title

The Division II-A Girls State Basketball Championship trophy has come back home to the Webb School campus after a two-year hiatus. The Lady Spartans defeated Franklin Road Academy (FRA), 55-42, to win this year’s TSSAA Division II-A BlueCross Basketball Championship, March 3, at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena in Nashville.

The championship game was a hard-fought, back-and forth battle. Both the Lady Spartans and the Lady Panthers poured on strong defensive play with just one point separating the two teams at halftime – Webb 20, FRA 19. Webb took an early third-quarter lead, 23-19, and kept a four-point spread in its favor, 32-28, heading to the last quarter.

Early fourth-quarter play saw the Lady Spartans taking control, increasing their advantage to 36-30; then holding the Lady Panthers to just two more points, as Webb posted another four to the scoreboard, 40-32, with four minutes left in the game.

A quick time-out for the Lady Spartans at the 2:40 mark and Webb was up 44-32 and on its way to a sixth state crown as the clock ticked down to the final buzzer.
