Webb Girls, Boys Basketball Teams Head to State Final Four
Lady Spartans take on Northpoint Christian School, Spartan boys face Lausanne Collegiate in state semis, March 1, at Lipscomb University.
After missing a bid to the state championships last year, Webb’s varsity basketball teams would not be denied that opportunity at this year’s Division II-A sectionals. With home advantage, the Lady Spartans cruised to a 40-19 victory over Christ Presbyterian Academy, February 23, while the Spartan boys played the next day and powered past Harding Academy of Memphis, 51-38 – both teams punching their tickets to this Thursday’s state championship final four in Nashville.
The Lady Spartans turned up their defensive pressure at Friday’s substate, holding the Lady Lions to sub-20 points for the game. Senior Hayley Luttrell led Webb in scoring with 16, followed by freshman Macy Barnes with 11. Sophomore Jasmine Jefferson netted 6 and junior Casey Collier recorded 5.
Webb’s Lady Spartans (23-7) will be looking to grab their sixth state crown at this year’s Division II BlueCross Basketball Championships as they take on Northpoint Christian School in the state semis, Thursday. Tip-off is at 1:15 p.m. CST at Allen Arena on the Lipscomb University campus.
Despite a tough first half at Saturday’s substate, Webb’s Spartan boys regrouped and found their rhythm in the third quarter against Harding Academy, taking the lead and never looking back. Senior Chase Ridenour posted 21 points, including five shots beyond the arc. Classmate Myles Rasnick scored 14, while junior Charlie Wyrick added 10.
The Spartans (28-5), who have never been to the state final, are setting their sights on making school history at Thursday’s semis when they face Lausanne Collegiate School at 2:45 p.m. CST at Allen Arena.
