Webb Basketball Teams Sweep Region Championship on Road to State
Lady Spartans to host CPA, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m., boys will take on Harding Academy, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.
Both Webb girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams clinched this year’s Division II-A East Region championship, earning home court advantage for this weekend’s sub-state play.
The Lady Spartans (22-7) netted their 14th Region title with a 52-35 win over Christian Academy of Knoxville at Notre Dame High in Chattanooga. Junior point guard and Miss Basketball finalist Casey Collier was named tournament MVP. Collier, along with senior Hayley Luttrell and freshman Catherine Hendershott earned All-Region Tournament Team kudos.
The boys’ Spartan team posted a commanding 44-19 win over Grace Christian to take the Region crown – the Spartans’ third Region championship in five years. Webb (27-5) took a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased the lead to 21-9 by halftime. The win was all but sealed with a 34-14 score at the end of the third quarter.
Tournament MVP Myles Rasnick ’18 led with 15 points, followed by junior Charlie Wyrick with eight. Rasnick, Wyrick and senior Chase Ridenour were named to the All-Region Tournment Team.
Webb's Lady Spartans will host Christ Presbyterian Academy in sub-state, Friday, February 23, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Lee Athletic Center. Sub-state play for the boys’ team gets underway, Saturday, February 24, at 5 p.m. when the Spartans will take on the Harding Academy Lions of Memphis.
