Zack and Stone bring home the gold and the team wins the Coach Mac Memorial Sportsmanship Award.
Friday 1/11 at noon, the wrestling team departed for Sewanee, TN to wrestle in the 38th annual Mountain Top Invitational hosted by St. Andrew's Sewanee School. Originally, we were set to leave after practice Friday, but, when the weather report started forecasting snow and ice along with subfreezing temps, we had to change plans. First, we changed departure for 2:30pm, then, on Friday morning, we changed departure to noon.
Many, many thanks to Mr. McBrien, Coach Meske and all other faculty and staff who chipped in helping us depart when we did, covering classes, making sure the boys got food, etc. It was not an easy decision or process, but everyone pulled together and made it happen.
I am ecstatic that we were able to make it happen, because it was a really great experience for the team. We placed fourth overall, received the sportsmanship award for the tournament and placed seven of the ten wrestlers who went.
Results are as follows:
106 lbs Matthew Tieng - 3rd
138 lbs Zack Tieng - 1st!
145 lbs Lucas Farr - 3rd
160 lbs Charlie Morton - 3rd
195 lbs Stone Cummins - 1st!
220 lbs Brik Boruff - 4th
285 lbs Sam Werner - 3rd
Also participating were Jack Gulley (152 lbs), Jake Fuller (170 lbs) and 8th grader Billy Robinson making his Varsity debut. While Billy did not place, he did take his first Varsity match of his career. The future is bright!
