Webb Swims to Fifth Place Team Finish at KISL Championships

Jack Hamilton wins men’s 200-yard IM and 100-yard backstroke; Emma Martin takes runner-up in women's 100-yard butterfly.
While Webb School’s varsity swimming team may be limited in numbers, there was no limit to its drive and talent at this year’s Knox-Area Interscholastic Swim League (KISL) City Meet Championships, January 19 and 20. Facing powerhouse teams with more than twice the number of competitors, Webb finished fifth, overall (345 points), out of the 30 area schools represented at University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

Junior Jack Hamilton led the boys’ Spartan team with victories in both the men’s 200-yard individual medley (1:53.40) and the 100-yard backstroke (50.96). He was also the starting leg for the Spartans’ 200-yard medley relay team that took fourth (1:41.91) and included freshman Timmy Zitzman, senior Stephen Martin and junior Blaine Allen. Hamilton, Martin, Allen, and freshman Taylor Dunn also raced in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay and finished sixth in a time of 1:34.72.

Zitzman took seventh in the men’s 500-yard freestyle (5:10.79) and 11th in the 200-yard free (1:54.66). Martin was eighth in the men’s 100-yard butterfly (58.31) and Allen finished 12th in the 50-yard freestyle (23.66). In the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay, Zitzman, Dunn, freshman Connor Brunson, and sophomore Walker Smith teamed up to finish sixth (4:00.38).

Webb’s Lady Spartan swimmers contributed points in numerous races. Sophomore Emma Martin led the way, finishing runner-up in the women’s 100-yard butterfly (58.64) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.45). Lattie Midis, a freshman, was third in the women’s 100-yard free (54.29) and fourth in the 50-yard free (24.97). Sophomore Corinne Chiles took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (55.05) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.02).

Senior Simone Digby placed fifth in the women’s 100-yard butterfly (59.85) and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.97), while classmate Elizabeth Moore was 10th in the 200-yard IM (2:25.28) and 13th in the 500-yard free (5:53.78).

Chiles, Digby, Martin, and senior Taylor Repine posted third in the women’s 200-yard medley relay (1:53.63), while Martin, Midis, Moore, and junior Niki Narayani took sixth in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay (4:01.47).

Webb’s swimmers will return to the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center, February 9 and 10, where they plan to make waves at the 2018 Tennessee State High School Swimming & Diving Championship. Let’s go Spartans!
