Spartan Wrestlers Tieng, Boruff Medal at Individual State Championships

Having finished in the top four in their respective weight divisions at the 2019 TSSAA Division II Individual Qualifier, Spartan grapplers Zack Tieng ’19 and Brik Boruff ’21 were among the qualifying wrestlers from across the state to compete at this year’s DII Individual State Wrestling Championships at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center in Franklin, Tennessee.

Both Tieng and Boruff garnered All-State honors with Tieng bringing home third place in the 145-pound weight division and Boruff (220) taking fifth.

Tieng closes out his exemplary Webb varsity wrestling career with three state medals, having placed sixth in both the 2016 (126) and 2017 (132) Individual State Wrestling Championships. This year marks Boruff’s second state appearance, having made the consolation bracket at last year’s contest.

Earlier in the season, Webb’s Spartan grapplers put in a strong showing at the Mountain Top Invitational, hosted by St. Andrew's Sewanee School. Tieng, Boruff and junior Jake Fuller (170) all finished runner-up in their respective weight classes. Webb placed in the top 10, overall, out of the 16-plus teams competing and several of the 14 Spartan team members placed in the top six in their weight divisions.

Webb head varsity wrestling coach, Blake Herrin, says he's pleased with his team’s overall performance for the season, noting that most of the Spartan squad is comprised of freshmen and sophomores. “We’re a small, young team, so it was challenging at the beginning of the season,” Herrin said, “but with hard work, perseverance and dedication, we definitely grew into a truly competitive squad.” Herrin added that with only one senior graduating, the Spartans are primed for an even more successful season next year. “Zack Tieng has been an outstanding competitor and leader for us, and we will definitely miss him next year,” says Herrin. “Moving forward and looking at the progress everyone made this season, I’m really excited about the future of Webb’s wrestling program.”
