Spartan student-athletes earn Sports Awards nominations, All-PrepXtra distinction
Webb senior Spartan laxman Liam Devlin has been named Knoxville High School Sports Awards (KHSSA) boys lacrosse player of the year for 2021-2022. Presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans, the KHSSA announced this year’s winners at a special event, June 9, at the Tennessee Theatre.
Devlin was one of six local varsity lacrosse players to be nominated for the 2021-2022 Sports Awards. Selected to this year’s Division II All-State team, the Spartan defenseman led his squad in ground balls with 99, setting a new school record for pick-ups by a non-face-off specialist. Devlin was also Webb’s top player in forced turnovers with 26 and finished his senior season as the fifth leading scorer with 20 goals and 11 assists.
Of the six area lacrosse players to be nominated for this year’s KHSSA, three were Webb Spartan players. In addition to Devlin, Baxter Johnson and his brother, Hank Johnson, earned their spots on the nominees list. Midfielder Baxter Johnson is considered to be the first eighth grade player ever to be named to the Division II All-State team. He recorded 21 goals, 17 assists, 64 ground balls, and 24 takeaways this season. Junior goalkeeper Hank Johnson was selected to the Division II All-State team for the second year in a row. He posted 135 saves, registering a save percentage of 64 percent, and collected 21 ground balls.
All nominees for the Knoxville High School Sports Awards were selected from the Knox News All-PrepXtra team lists, and a significant number of Spartan athletes earned PrepXtra distinction for 2021-2022, including the following:
SPRING 2022 SEASON
In track and field, long jump and triple jump sensation Lennox Langham ’25 was named to the All-PrepXtra girls track and field team and earned a KHSSA nominee nod. She won the both the triple jump (37-8 ½) and long jump (17-5 ½) at the Division II-AA state track and field championships, marking her second consecutive appearance on the winners’ podium in both events at state. Langham is ranked No. 1 in the state in the triple jump with a best distance of 39-feet-2 ¾. Teammate Jazzlyn Garmer ’26 was also a PrepXtra selection and KHSSA nominee. The Webb eighth grader won the girls’ 3200-meter race at state in a time of 11:10.08 and is ranked No. 3 in the state with a PR time of 10:49.63. Webb’s Lady Spartan 4 X 800-meter relay team of eighth graders Jazzlyn and Calysta Garmer, sophomore Anna Graves and senior Lawson Phillips repeated a first-place showing at this year’s Division II-AA state championship and received PrepXtra recognition.
Spartan senior midfielder Spencer Bernard was selected to the Knox News PrepXtra boys soccer first team and nominated for KHSSA boys soccer player of the year. The Rhodes College commitment anchored the Spartans’ midfield, recording 10 goals and nine assists. PrepXtra second team kudos went to Spartan defender JP Quigley ’23.
Senior midfielder Garrett Carnathan was named to the All-PrepXtra boys lacrosse team in addition to Devlin and Baxter and Hank Johnson.
WINTER 2021-2022 SEASON
Both Lady Spartan bowling team members Gracie Laque ’24 and Alexia Leek ’22 earned News Sentinel All-PrepXtra bowling team distinction and were nominated for KHSSA girls bowler of the year. Laque finished 16th at the Division II girls state individual tournament, averaging a 143.5, while Leek took 17th at state with an average of 137.5.
Anderson University signee Luke Lentz ’22 was named to the Knox News All-PrepXtra boys basketball third team for 2021-2022.
FALL 2021 SEASON
Calysta and Jazzlyn Garmer were both nominated for Knoxville High School Sports Awards girls cross-country runner of the year, having landed spots on the All-PrepXtra girls cross-country first team. Jazzlyn Garmer placed third at the 2021 Division II-AA state cross-country championship in a time of 18:36.80, helping to propel her Lady Spartans to a runner-up finish. Calysta Garmer took fourth at state, crossing the finish line in a time of 18:50.70.
Senior kicker/punter Otto Niendorff was included on the PrepXtra football second team for defense, while linebacker Joey Bonifacio ’23 secured a spot on the PrepXtra football third team for defense.
Sophomore setter Landyn Langham was named to the News Sentinel’s All-PrepXtra volleyball second team, while Lady Spartan golfer Palmer Sykes ’24 earned All-PrepXtra girls golf second team kudos.
