Senior Spartan football player Bradee McCoy and senior pitcher Eli Varner have inked their intentions to continue their athletic careers in college. Webb School of Knoxville hosted celebration ceremonies for both student-athletes, May 3.
Defensive back/wide receiver Bradee McCoy has committed as a preferred walk-on for the Eastern Kentucky University Colonels football team. McCoy has been a starter for the Spartans since joining the program his junior year. Over the past two seasons, he has compiled a defensive record of 97 tackles (61 solo, 36 assists) with 2 tackles for loss and 3 interceptions – one of which he returned 70 yards for a touchdown. He also forced 1 fumble and had 2 fumble recoveries and 17 pass break-ups. On offense, McCoy had a total of 2 touchdowns (1 rushing, 1 receiving) and collected 7 receptions for 79 yards and 3 carries for 22 yards.
Co-captain of this year’s Spartan football team, McCoy was named a First Team All-Region player his senior season and Second Team All-Region in 2020. He was also selected to play in the Rivalry Showcase All-Star Football game this past December and is the recipient of Webb’s Spartan Award for leadership, character and achievement in a varsity sport.
Eli Varner signed with Tennessee Wesleyan University for baseball. Varner pitched in six games for the Spartans his senior season with 20 innings pitched, and earned two wins for Webb. Additionally, Varner tallied 24 strikeouts in innings pitched this year. At the plate, he contributed 1 home run for the Spartans this season. He also started in 15 games for Webb playing shortstop and outfield.
