Spartan Athletes Shine at 2018-2019 Knox News Sports Awards

Lady Spartan volleyball sensation Kayleigh Hames named Girls Athlete of the Year.

At this year’s Knox News Sports Awards, nearly 200 high school athletes in East Tennessee were recognized at what was called “the biggest night in high school sports.” Of the some-35 awards presented at the event, six were given to Webb School of Knoxville Spartan athletes, including Girls Athlete of the Year. In addition, Webb was well represented in the numerous categories featured at this year’s ceremony.

The Knox News Sports Awards, celebrating its third year, recognizes and honors the top athletic accomplishments of East Tennessee area high school athletes.

This year’s Spartan recipients of the Knox News Sports Awards are as follows:

5Star Preps Co-Volleyball Player of the Year Kayleigh Hames ’19 was named Knox News Sports Awards’ GIRLS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR and VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR. The outside hitter and Pepperdine University signee registered 708 kills, 299 digs, 67 assists, and 66 aces her senior season, and was named Division II-A state tournament MVP after leading her Lady Spartans to their six straight state title. Kayleigh’s sister Nicklin Hames ’18, a starting setter for Nebraska, also earned the distinction of Knox News VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR in 2018.

• Lady Spartan girls cross-country and track & field sensation Niki Narayani ’19 won both Knox News Sports Awards’ GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY and GIRLS TRACK & FIELD RUNNER OF THE YEAR honors for 2018-2019. The Vanderbilt University signee was named 5Star Preps Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year in 2018. A multiple state champion in cross country and track & field, she led her Lady Spartans to their seventh straight state cross-country team title in 2018 and the school’s first ever state team crown in girls track and field in 2019.

• Junior tennis standout Audrey Yoon was presented with this year’s Knox News Sports Awards’ GIRLS TENNIS PLAYER OF THE YEAR title. Yoon and her Lady Spartans cruised to a historical 10th consecutive state team crown at this year’s TSSAA Spring Fling Division II-A state team tennis championships. She returned to the winners’ podium a day later to accept the DII-A girls state singles title after defeating Silverdale Baptist Academy’s Addison Horton, 6-2, 6-1, in the championship match.

• Ohm Sharma, a graduate of the Class of 2019, was selected as Knox News Sports Awards’ BOYS TENNIS PLAYER OF THE YEAR. Sharma and doubles partner Wilder Dewhirst ’23 clinched the boys state team title at this year’s DII-A championships after finals play was pushed to the doubles matches. The Webb duo went on to defeat CAK, 8-3, to lock up the Spartans’ third state team title in a row and eighth overall.
