welcome from President Sanders

On the school’s opening day in 1955, Robert Webb, Webb School of Knoxville’s founder and first headmaster, shared these words with the school’s inaugural four students: “Your teachers will try to teach you to build strong bodies . . . train your intelligence . . . give you a strong sense of values so you will always know right from wrong. They will try very hard to teach you how to study, and last, but not least, they will try to teach you how to think.” All of us at Webb continue to embrace and are inspired by the spirit and values embedded in Mr. Webb’s charge as we strive to support our students in going farther and going further.

Welcome to Webb School of Knoxville, an independent coeducational day school, enrolling students from pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our students arrive at Webb from all corners of Knoxville, Tennessee, and beyond, and from a variety of backgrounds and interests. Their personal stories enrich our community and further inspire our pursuit of excellence, culture of connection and care, and commitment to nurture the full potential of each individual. Thanks to our world-class faculty and staff, bolstered by close partnerships with families and passionate alumni, our students’ achievements – from college readiness, unique academic pursuits, and top-ranked athletics, to student-led clubs and extracurricular activities, creative endeavors in the visual and performing arts, and many others – are broad and extraordinary. Indeed, Webb School students enjoy an abundance of opportunities to learn, grow, have fun, and thrive.

Ask any of our Spartan alumni to recall the most valuable aspects of their Webb experience, and they will likely mention the Honor Code and relationships. More than a pledge to not lie, cheat, or steal – nor tolerate those who do – the Honor Code is  based on the premise that every student has a fundamental right to be trusted and to have their word accepted at all times and by all people. The atmosphere of mutual trust between students and faculty at Webb is fundamental to the community and enriches the lives of all who work and study here. Like the Honor Code, relationships are the bedrock of Webb School. Here students are genuinely known by our faculty and staff, cultivating a sense of belonging that allows each student to make the most of their time at Webb while forging lifelong relationships with one another.

I invite you to explore our website and, even more importantly, to see us in action on our campus! Webb students, faculty, and staff are remarkable and can tell you in their own eloquent words why this school means so much to them and to generations of alumni who proudly say that it all began here.

Welcome to Webb, and I hope to have a chance to meet you soon.
